Spectral Wound play black metal.  Furious and visceral, untrammeled by esoteric posture or grasping idealism.  It is music for the poisoned, the futile, the debauched and profane. The blooming of a flower of corruption, torn by cold winds.

Following the raw early offering of Terra Nullius (Arcane Angels/Out of Season 2015) Spectral Wound continued their path of creeping, opulent decay and searing melody, weaving strands of Métal noir Québécois with the weft of the Scandinavian canon. Refining its sound over Infernal Decadence (Vendetta, 2018) and the towering, exultant melancholy of A Diabolic Thirst (Profound Lore, 2021), with Songs Of Blood and Mire (Profound Lore 2024) the band delivers an elegy of the void, seething with the venom and clamour of an ever-emptying world.

In 2022, WORMWITCH struck out to independently release a string of singles and embark upon several tours of North America. After a busy festival season, 2024 saw the release of a six-song split with Atlanta black-thrashers Sadistic Ritual.

Now, with blades meticulously honed and tempered under the light of a feral Canadian moon, WORMWITCH emerges once more to offer their fourth full length record. Simply self-titled, “Wormwitch” is a statement of a band coming into it’s own - a revelrous celebration of devilish speed, searing melody and diabolical intensity.

Experimental metal trio LOCRIAN are a prophetic voice of decline and a pioneering force in the world of metal. The new LP is named in honor of the local woods and riverlands that continue to inspire the studio project. This record is an account of a life spent in the rotten heartlands of neoliberal capitalism and a tribute to the vibrant underground music cultures that thrived before the second half of the last decade.

Expanding on the directness of “Nightmare Visions”, “Ashes” is grander in scope, and is internally regarded as a more focused analogue to 2019’s “Mirror in Darkness”. Hafsteinn Viðar Ársælsson’s dark and intricate illustrations once again accompany the music with striking depictions of abandoned landscapes, arranged to invoke a sense of catastrophe and unwilling transformation.

Primary musical influences include Death Grips’ “Jenny Death” (which the record homages in its gradient-like structure, its centerpiece “Still You Haunt Me” even acting as a reimagined “On GP”), the downtuned hyperaggressions of Morbid Angel’s “Gateways to Annihilation”, and the cinematic, raw intimacies of Pelican’s “The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw”.

Contributions include reamping and additional mixing by longtime collaborator Maya Chun (of screamo prodigies Heavenly Blue and countless solo projects) in the frigid spaces of Detroit’s Telescope Vision Studio.

Hafsteinn Viðar Ársælsson’s dark and intricate illustrations once again accompany the music with striking depictions of abandoned landscapes, arranged to invoke a sense of catastrophe and unwilling transformation.

Primary musical influences include Death Grips’ “Jenny Death” (which the record homages in its gradient-like structure, its centerpiece “Still You Haunt Me” even acting as a reimagined “On GP”), the downtuned hyperaggressions of Morbid Angel’s “Gateways to Annihilation”, and the cinematic, raw intimacies of Pelican’s “The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw”.

Contributions include reamping and additional mixing by longtime collaborator Maya Chun (of screamo prodigies Heavenly Blue and countless solo projects) in the frigid spaces of Detroit’s Telescope Vision Studio.

Bay Area technical death metal entity FABRICANT leverages any musical tool for their riff and song fabrication.  Speed, stillness, technicality, simplicity, consonance, dissonance… are all at play for the express purpose of telling the stories of humanity’s hubris, madness, and frailty. British epic doom metallers Godthrymm (featuring members once involved in such luminaries as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Vallenfyre, and Solstice) return with their new album, Distortions. The follow-up to 2020’s widely-lauded Reflections shows the Halifax-based quartet of Hamish Glencross (guitars/vocals), Catherine Glencross (keyboards/vocals), “Sasquatch” Bob Crolla (bass), and Shaun “Winter” Taylor-Steels (drums) elegantly expanding upon their sound and vision. With tracks like “Follow Me,” featuring former My Dying Bride compatriot Aaron Stainthorpe, “Echoes,” and “Devils,” Distortions advances Godthrymm into the hallowed halls of the genre they adore to death.

“I absolutely wanted to create a much more layered and complex arrangement in the sound,” says Godthrymm’s Hamish Glencross. “Totally amping up the contrasts to the extreme—the light shines brighter, and the darker depths are vast trenches. There is a lot more harmony and melancholy for much of it, but also some slab-heavy riffing, too. We wanted a total progression in the production and more class and clarity in the sound, as opposed to Reflections, which could get quite dense in tone.”

Distortions is the second part of Glencross’ Visions trilogy—the third part, Projections, is already in the works. Throughout its seven-track, hour-long expanse, Godthrymm’s sophomore effort delves deeper into the despondent march of post-pandemic singles “Chasm” and “In Perpetuum,” the latter released exclusively on Decibel Magazine’s Decibel Flexi Series in 2022. Glencross’ emotionally-charged vocals pair perfectly with his towering riffs and thoughtful, crestfallen harmonies. The rhythmic foundation of Crolla and Taylor-Steels is absolutely critical to Glencross’ woebegone éclat. With Catherine Glencross’ angelic vocals and atmospheric keyboards stitched into the monumental “As Titans,” the granite-hard “Obsess and Regress,” and the stirring “Pictures Remain,” Distortions has it all.

“The songwriting for Distortions began during the first lockdown,” Glencross says. “That inspired me to start writing and recording at home, and that structure helped define how we would ultimately write the album. It was very much isolated for the most part, though. I would write and record the first arrangement of a song and then send it through to the others, who would record their parts and send them back. Then, it would be a case of refining and rewriting as inspired by the contributions of everyone. Only one song, ‘Devils,’ was written in the rehearsal room before the rest of the album.”

For an album centered lyrically on grief, loss, regret, resolve, love, and determination, it’s hard to imagine something inexplicably heavy yet remarkably beautiful. Producer Andy Hawkins (Hark, Grave Lines) was the perfect man for the job. Spread across The Nave Studio in Leeds and Sasquatch Music Studio in Huddersfield, he captured Godthrymm at their most menacing (“Unseen Unheard”) and vulnerable (“Follow Me”). The tones he extracted from Glencross, Crolla, and Taylor-Steels absolutely crush, while the brighter moments (like Catherine Glencross’ spell-binding vocals on “Obsess and Regress”) splinter Godthrymm’s disheartened darkness in two. Distortions was mastered by Mark Midgley (Doom, Hellkrusher) for Northern Mastering Co.

Pacific Northwestern doom metal monolith BELL WITCH will see the release of their new album “Future’s Shadow Part 1: The Clandestine Gate” on April 21st digitally followed by its physical release on 2LP/2CD/Cassette, June 9.  Pre-orders, along with a short-making of video of the album are now live (link in bio).  As well, the band have announced a surprise appearance at this year’s Roadburn Festival on April 20th where they will perform “The Clandestine Gate” in its entirety.

For their new album, bassist/vocalist Dylan Desmond and drummer/vocalist Jesse Shreibman exploded Bell Witch's bounds. Like 2017's lauded “Mirror Reaper”, “The Clandestine Gate” is a single 83-minute track -- a composition that pulses and breathes on a filmic timeframe. It constitutes the first chapter in a planned triptych of longform albums, collectively called “Future's Shadow.”

While traces of organ and synthesizer hovered over “Mirror Reaper” and Bell Witch's 2020 collaboration with Aerial Ruin, “Stygian Bough Volume 1”, “The Clandestine Gate” drew those instruments closer to the center of its compositions.  The band reunited with their longtime producer Billy Anderson as they began negotiating these new compositional weights.  On “The Clandestine Gate”, Bell Witch's twinned voices build off of the chantlike textures of previous records while steering toward more developed melodic lines, structured harmonies, and rhythmic death metal growls.

The immense gravity of a work like “The Clandestine Gate”, which features exclusive stunning cover art by Jordi Diaz Alama, allows ideas to simmer in a way that feels profoundly and somatically intuitive -- not just a philosophical exercise, but an embodied truth. By slowing down both their creative process and the tempo of the music itself, Bell Witch digs even deeper into their long standing focus: the way life spills on inside its minuscule container, both eternal and fleeting, a chord that echoes without resolution.

Taking its name from the 50-foot effigy burned every year by a hysterical mob during the Fiestas De Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM, ZOZOBRA is the brainchild of Caleb Scofield (Cave In/Old Man Gloom) and to carry on his musical legacy, the two ZOZOBRA albums “Harmonic Tremors” (2007) and “Bird Of Prey (2008) can now be streamed everywhere on all streaming platforms once again.  Also both albums will see their respective vinyl releases sometime spring next year, the first time they will be officially issued on vinyl for widespread distribution (previous editions were tour-only editions and the Caleb memorial version).

Following on “Harmonic Tremors” seismic heels, “Bird Of Prey” was originally released in 2008 via Hydra Head Records respectively and features drummer Aaron Harris (Isis) who also recorded and mixed “Bird Of Prey”.  Scofield’s second full-length under the ZOZOBRA moniker is a white-hot exploder shot through with snaking melody lines and implacable riffs. TITHE is a Portland, Oregon based band that constructs an unorthodox amalgamation of death metal, black metal, and grind without straying too far from the fundamentals of aggressiveness and depravity.  Conceived in 2017 by vocalist/guitarist Matt Eiseman and drummer Kevin Swartz, the band spent its first years writing and releasing a self-titled EP before finding bassist Alex Huddleston at the end of 2018.  This lineup went on to release the debut LP “Penance” in May 2020, which despite the challenge of releasing in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, was well-received.  The album explores the themes of psychedelics, mental illness and the human condition.

The album, produced by Strachan and mixed by Sanford Parker (Darkthrone, Yob, BLOODYMINDED) explores the possible meanings of love in a time of political and environmental collapse.

Reeking Aura is a NY/NJ based death/doom metal band in the old school tradition comprised of known scene veterans from Long Island and NYC. Originally conceived as a project for guitarists Ryan Lipynsky (Unearthly Trance, The Howling Wind) and Rick Habeeb (Grey Skies Fallen, Buckshot Facelift) to share lead duties, additional guitarist Terrell Grannum (Thaetas, Buckshot Facelift), was brought into the fold along with fellow Buckshot Facelift alumni Tom Anderer (Grey Skies Fallen) on bass and William “Big Will” Smith (Afterbirth, Ex-Artificial Brain) on vocals in late 2019.

Since releasing their debut 3 song EP “Beneath the Canopy of Compost” on Parasitic records in 2020, the band has parted ways amicably with drummer and friend Keith Harris (Afterbirth) and welcomed Sam Shereck (Blame God, Stabbed) behind the kit. Though unable to perform live during the pandemic, the group used 2020 and 2021 to write and record their debut full length album “Blood and Bonemeal”. They again chose to work with well-respected producer Colin Marston at his Menegroth the Thousand Caves studio in Queens, NY. Colin handled all stages of production from tracking to mixing and mastering with drums being recorded at Rock N Roll Gas Station studios on Long Island, NY.

“Blood and Bonemeal” is a concept album centered around the caretaker of a desolate agricultural property and that persons struggles with morbid psychosis. Musically, the band sought to further explore the possibilities of a 3-pronged lead guitar team, while the revamped rhythm section held down the bombastic wall of sound.

Profound Lore Records is proud to announce the May 6th release of Italian one-man death metal force COSMIC PUTREFACTION’s third album “Crepuscular Dirge For The Blessed Ones”.

On “Crepuscular Dirge For The Blessed Ones”, sole mastermind Gabriele Garmaglia continues the COSMIC PUTREFACTION narrative begun on the previous album “The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers”, where the only survivor from an apocalyptic annihilation of a dying planet walks towards its withered horizons.  On “Crepuscular Dirge…” this character ultimately finds an even more sorrowful truth at the end of his journey; one that shows the empyrean fall of man through the metaphysical world and the gods whom inhabit it.

Through “Crepuscular Dirge For The Blessed Ones”, Gramaglia establishes even more his own vision of death metal, this time enriching his multifaceted sound with widened atmospheres and a patina of omnipresent melancholy suggested by distant arpeggios, e-bow guitars and sometimes even synths organically blended with the relentless, ferocious riffs always present in this new effort.  To cap off this layered effort, Gramaglia this time relied on drummer Giulio Galati (Nero di Marte, Hideous Divinity) to deliver an extremely powerful and dynamic performance behind the kit.

COSMIC PUTREFACTION was formed in 2018 as the death metal sonic incarnation of the multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Gramaglia (also behind The Clearing Path and part of Turris Eburnea and Vertebra Atlantis), which summoned the aforementioned musical entity to re-arrange and complete the unreleased album of his first band Oaken/Throne, which begun in 2012 but was left uncompleted because the combo disbanded.  This album was completed and released in 2019 under the name of “At the Threshold of the Greatest Chasm”, which comprehended six-and-a-half tracks taken from the unreleased Oaken/Throne album.  He later refined his formula through the second album “The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers” which expanded the death metal roots with the multifaceted range of influences Gramaglia has developed throughout the years.

Drawing frequent comparisons to mind-altering progressive death metal acts, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN have distinguished themselves from their peers through an emphasis on rich, melancholic melodic figures, contextualizing the harmonic and emotive qualities of black metal within a more aggressive death metal framework. FERAL SEASON is Karl Cordtz (Chrch, Occlith) and Patrick Hills (Occlith, ex-King Woman). All songs and lyrics were written by Cordtz in isolation during the Summer and Fall of 2020. New York’s Pop. 1280 was formed in 2008 by Chris Bug and Ivan Drip, with the vision of rebelling against the music of the day and making their own soundtrack for the end times. Initially a noise rock outfit, the band has released five LPs and numerous singles integrating diverse influences of industrial, EBM, techno, and post-punk into their signature sound. In 2018, Matthew Hord joined Chris and Ivan, and this new trio embarked on a collaborative journey that saw the band shed their rock roots and turn their focus toward sequencers, drum machines, samplers, and synthesizers. VOUNA is the project of multi-instrumentalist and composer Yianna Bekris. With her second full-length album “Atropos”, she unveils a towering and singular doom metal wonder in a unique visioning reminiscent of My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Evoken.  Upon the thick foundation of doom, multiple musical textures intertwine into her sound: atmospheric black metal, dungeon synth, darkwave, film scores, and rebetiko.  It is through these woven sonic tapestries that Bekris creates vivid atmospheres expressing the myriad emotions surrounding death, mourning, and suicidal ideation.  “Atropos”, named for the Greek fate who cut the thread of life thus determining the final fate for mortals, not only conveys the inevitability of death, but also explores its contrasting and dynamic nature through immersive compositions representing despair, loneliness, anxiety, peace, and dignity. 
VOUNA’s debut was recorded at the Owl Lodge in Olympia, WA in 2017 and subsequently released by Artemisia Records in 2018.  Though her debut was synth-focused, “Atropos” gives the guitars more weight and space while retaining an abundance of vintage '90s synthesizers, and additionally utilizes analog synths and folk and orchestral instrumentation for dramatic effect.  “Atropos” sees her further expand VOUNA’s sound through the collaboration with several guest musicians, including Nathan Weaver (Wolves in the Throne Room) on vocals, Asia Kindred Moore (Sangre de Muerdago, Solace) on the harp, Entrail on violin, and members of the VOUNA live lineup playing synth and electric lap steel.

Evoking visions of dripping and lurching horror films, outer space travel, and gritty noir textures, NYC-based instrumental band INSECT ARK is led by founder Dana Schechter (bass, lap steel guitar, synthesizers).  Using delay-drenched lapsteel, distorted bass & snyths, and acoustic and electronic drums, INSECT ARK's music creates a sonic mural both uncomfortably intimate and icy cold.

The follow-up to 2018's "Marrow Hymns" LP… "The Vanishing", out Feb 28, 2020 sees Schechter team up with drummer Andy Patterson (SUBROSA) and with his addition to the INSECT ARK fold, "The Vanishing" further expands the INSECT ARK sound picture resulting in their most expansive, immersive, and intricately crafted album to date.  Recorded and mixed by Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia), "The Vanishing" flourishes through a sound canvas so immense and enveloping, cinematic and grandiose yet hypnotic, trance-inducing, and alluring at the same time.

Bridging the gap between experimentation and song form, a heavy focus is on composition, but INSECT ARK is not content to stay in the studio.  It is very much a live experience, with emphasis on the live instrumentation of bass, lap steel, drums, and synths using intricate live analog looping techniques to achieve a monster "wall of sound" with only one or two people on stage accompanied by mind-bending animated visuals - also made by Schechter who works as a video artist in the film business - completes the live experience to envelop and crush the senses.

Formed in late 2011, INSECT ARK began as a one-woman solo project of Schechter who made three solo INSECT ARK records in which she recorded and played all the parts herself (as seen on the "Collapsar" 7", the "Long Arms" 10", and the "Portal/Well" LP).  In 2015, drummer/analog electronics builder Ashley Spungin joined and together they made 2018's "Marrow Hymns" and toured extensively.  In September 2019, drummer Andy Patterson (SUBROSA) would replace Spungin prior to him and Schechter entering the studio to record "The Vanishing".

Schechter has worked as a collaborator for studio/stage with Swans, Angels Of Light, Zeal & Ardor, Arabrot, Wrekmeister Harmonies, Gnaw, Bee and Flower, and Gifthorse.  Starting in the spring of 2020, she will be joining Swans as a primary touring member of the band.

BELL WITCH, formed by Dylan Desmond (ex-Samothrace) and ex-drummer/vocalist Adrian Guerra (RIP) first made an immediate impact within the death/doom metal scene with their 011 self-titled demo and would then partner with Profound Lore Records for the release of their debut album “Longing” in Nov 2012. It was a turning point album which saw the band do even more extensive touring (in North America and Europe) and perform at many notable events and festivals such as Roadburn, Basilica Soundscape, Pitchfork  Northside, Sled Island, and Psycho CA.  Sept of 2015 would see a crucial turning point which saw Guerra leave the band and be replaced by current drummer/keyboardist/vocalist Jesse Shreibman. In May 2016 tragedy would hit with the untimely death of former and co-founding member Adrian Guerra.

On the themes surrounding the concept and lyrics of “Mirror Reaper” the band state, “Our original idea for this record was to write a two song album titled ‘As Above/So Below’. These two songs would have been split into seven movements to correlate with the 7 Hermetic principals. The process took a life of it's own and upon completion we have 1 song spanning 83 minutes. It is to be titled ‘Mirror Reaper’ in reference to the axiom ‘As Above So Below’. During the writing process we were devastated by the loss of our dear friend and former drummer, Adrian Guerra. In love and respect to his memory, we reserved an important yet brief section in the song for him that features vocal tracks left over from our last album. We believe he would be proud of it.”

Maryland/Pennsylvania experimental death-noise band FULL OF HELL have embarked on quite the journey leading up to the impending release of their latest full-length album “Trumpeting Ecstasy”, an album which will see the band deliver their most punishing, virulent, and dynamic album to date.

The embryonic beginnings of Full of Hell displayed their palette at it’s most primitive, d-beat and blast ridden hardcore punk with spats of noise and caustic rhythm, and within a few short years, they have bloomed into a true force to be reckoned with within the punk and metal communities.  Since the release of their Profound Lore Records debut album “Full Of Hell & Merzbow” late 2014, their third full-length album, the band began to truly come into their own, combining elements of grindcore, death/black metal, punk and hardcore with a smattering of sonically laden power electronics and industrial pounding.  It would also signal the band being at their most active and prolific ever since their inception in 2009.

The band would tour endlessly non-stop in different parts of the world in places as far off as Japan, Australia (twice), Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea etc.), along with several tour runs in Europe and many tour jaunts within the US, along with playing countless festivals and exclusive shows.  The band would also add to their repertoire and discography as well during said timeframe releasing a direct collaboration album with The Body and several EPs, one of them being their most-recent split 7”EP with Nails (which debuts #2 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart).

With “Trumpeting Ecstasy”, FULL OF HELL build upon their progression since the Merzbow collaboration and the releases succeeding it.  This time the band decided to go into God City Studios with Kurt Ballou at the production helm to help achieve the intended vision of “Trumpeting Ecstasy”.  The result being the best and strongest sounding FULL OF HELL album along with it being their most towering release to date.  Sky tearing and sonically cataclysmic, the aural deluge that is “Trumpeting Ecstasy” also features guest appearances by Aaron Turner (Sumac/Old Man Gloom/Mamiffer/Isis), Nate Newton (Converge/Old Man Gloom), Andrew Nolan (Column Of Heaven/The Endless Blockade), and Canadian singer/songwriter Nicole Dollanganger.  Expect FULL OF HELL to tour relentlessly in support of “Trumpeting Ecstasy” as well.
